Vascular Research Laboratory | University of Virginia
Our basic scientific research facilities are headed by two principle investigators. Upchurch Lab was originally established in the year of 1999 as part of the Conrad Jobst Vascular Research Lab in University of Michigan. Ailawadi Lab began in 2007 as the Aortic Aneurysm Research Program in the former Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery Research Lab of University of Virginia. In September 2010, Dr. Gilbert R. Upchurch Jr. moved from Michigan to Virginia. The two investigators joined efforts to study thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms. Some members of the Lung Transplant Research Lab also participates the day to day operation of our research activities. Our lab is located on the third floor of MR4 building. It consists of a molecular biology unit, a histology unit, an animal microsurgery room, a cold storage room and research offices. We also share large animal operating facilities and mouse breeding facilities with other labs. We are affiliated with the Department of Surgery and are part of the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center of University of Virginia. It is one of the few labs in the nation that is dedicated solely to the basic scientific research of aortic aneurysm.
