Vascular Screenings

What Are Vascular Screenings?

Affordable, comprehensive vascular screening is now offered weekly at UVA. Early detection and treatment of vascular disease can significantly reduce the risk for serious, sometimes disabling or even fatal conditions like heart attack or stroke.

Who is Eligible?

These screenings are intended for those who are not experiencing symptoms of vascular disease. Eligible patients include:

  • Age 65 or older
  • Age 50 or older with cardiovascular risk  factors
  • Adults 45 years or older whom an abnormal finding would prompt modification of their lifestyle practices or medical care
  • Family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm

What does this Screening Include?

In a single visit, patients receive three non-invasive tests.
Tests include:

  • Carotid Duplex Ultrasound
    • Evaluation for cartotid artery disease
    • Blockages that can lead to stroke
  • Abdominal Aorta Ultrasound
    • Evaluation for abdominal aorta aneurysms
  • Ankle Brachial Index
    • Evaluation for lower extremity (leg) arterial blockages

Where is the Screening Held?

The Vascular Screening Clinic is held once a week at the UVA Vascular Lab, conveniently located in the Northridge Medical Office Building at 2955 Ivy Rd. in Charlottesville. Insurance does not cover vascular screenings for those not experiencing symptoms. The out-of pocket cost is $99 for all three tests. Select flexible spending plans cover the cost.

We now offer vascular screenings at two offsite locations for your convenience:

  • UVA Specialty Care Augusta Cardiology and Vascular
  • Zion Crossroads Primary Care and Specialty Care

The screenings take a total of about 45 minutes, and the initial test results are available immediately.
