Welcome. The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of Virginia provides cutting edge care to patients with vascular disease. Our hope is to deliver excellent, compassionate, safe, and timely care to every patient every day with vascular disease. We pledge to provide the highest quality care based on clinical standards rooted in applied research and outcomes, while maintaining respect for our patients and their families. In doing this, we hope to elevate the care of patients with vascular disease while making this Division one of the best in the country.
We have tremendous and broad experience in managing vascular problems ranging from the most common to the rare and complex. Our doctors are among the best in the country. State-of-the art techniques of vascular surgery offered include angioplasty, intra-arterial stents, minimally invasive surgery, and fenestrated endografting. We perform over 900 major vascular operations a year.
Through our Heart and Vascular Center, multidisciplinary, multispecialty teams, such as cardiovascular medicine and interventional radiology, work together in a single location to make the overall patient experience more enjoyable. Patients can also choose to get vascular studies and be seen by physicians in our facilities at Zion’s Crossroads or Northridge, if they wish. In addition, our vascular surgeons see patients at our outreach clinics 1 to 2 days a month in Fishersville, Lexington, Zion’s Crossroads, and Culpeper, Virginia, as well as, Lewisburg, West Virginia.
From an institutional standpoint, we are witnessing a time of renewed interest and commitment to treating patients with vascular disease in a safe environment. We are one of two centers in State of Virginia that has performed fenestrated endovascular grafts for abdominal aortic aneurysms. We are one of the few centers in the country that treats vascular related sports injuries to high performance athletes, including external iliac arteriopathies. At our vein center, we perform a variety of medically necessary procedures, as well as, cosmetic treatment of varicose veins. We now offer vascular screenings in 3 locations: Northridge, Zions Crossroads, and Fishersville facilities to evaluate for carotid atherosclerosis, lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD), and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
Our state-of-the-art endovascular suite allows for pioneering hybrid procedures that combine endovascular and complex open surgery. For aortic emergencies our Aortic Alert system puts referring physicians in touch with our on call vascular and cardiac surgeons immediately via telephone to determine a plan and expedite transfers to our hospital. With high level coordinated care, advanced technology, and a multidisciplinary team at hand, we are able to treat very complex patients.
We are leaders in reconstruction and treatment of aortic aneurysms. We have a robust basic science vascular research lab with funding of 8.2 million dollars including multiple RO1 grants to explore new treatment options for aortic aneurysms. In addition, we have 12 ongoing IRB-approved clinical trials involving AAA/TAA disease. Recently, we were awarded by The Society of Vascular Surgery Patient Safety Organization (SVS PSO) with being in the top 10% of Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) centers that received a 3 star rating (highest level) for participation in quality improvement.
We look forward to serving our vascular population in the State of Virginia, as well as, nationally.
