Craig Bailey knows well the challenges faced by transplant surgery patients and didn’t let a little rain keep him from playing in the Second Annual University of Virginia Transplant Golf Benefit. In March 2015, Craig received what he calls a “gift of life” – a donated liver – at the UVA Medical Center. Craig is doing well with his new liver and said that during his transplant at UVA, he had “[n]othing but positive experiences from my surgeon on down to the information personnel at the front door.” After the Golf Benefit, Craig remarked, “Not only are the folks at UVA true professionals, they are caring and compassionate enough to give their time and effort to help those less fortunate. Hats off to a great group of human beings.”
Despite heavy rains on the day of the event, the Transplant Golf Benefit was a huge success, raising over $60,000 for the Transplant Patient Assistance Fund. Surgeons, staff, and supporters showed their commitment to Transplant patients, with only three registered players deciding not to take on the rainy course. After the tournament, participants attended a dinner, which included a raffle and an auction.
The funds raised – a $10,000 increase over last year’s profits – will be given to Transplant patients and their families who need help with the lodging, food, and travel associated with a loved one’s transplant surgery. In many cases, these logistical costs can be overwhelming for families.
Next year’s tournament will be on Monday, September 19, 2016. If you would like more information, please email Bonnie Farone at email@example.com.
