About

University of Virginia Dr. Allan Tsung, MD,, Chair Department of Surgery

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Nearly two centuries ago, the University of Virginia (UVA) became home to the nation’s 10th medical school. Surgical education was established in 1838 as Dr. James Cabell became the first Chair of Surgery. While we take pride in our distinguished history, we continuously strive to promote positive change in our community through outstanding patient-centered care for all community members, clinical excellence, translational discoveries, and strong development of the next generation of surgeon leaders.

The backbone of the Department, as demonstrated within all our specialty Divisions, is the culture of innovation which culminates in delivering leading-edge care and driving new research discoveries that transform the health of our communities. Our educational and research programs provide an environment of comprehensive training for medical students, residents, and fellows through healthy, inclusive, and diverse initiatives. Our funded faculty support cutting edge basic science, translational and clinical research, and  provide highly competitive opportunities for future surgeons to learn and grow.

Please explore our website to learn more about the unparalleled experience in the Department of Surgery at UVA through our highly accomplished faculty, residents, and fellows.

Respectfully,
Allan Tsung, M.D., F.A.C.S.
