Current Lab Members

Dr. Haywood

Nathan Haywood (Univ of Alabama)
Surgery Resident
Phone: 434-982-3711
Email: nsh9x@virginia.edu
Nate is a Surgery Research Resident supported by our NIH T32 training grant. One project he is working on is the development of an in vivo lung perfusion (IVLP) method to treat severe ARDS using a porcine model. Several murine research project study the role of purinergic signaling in lung ischemia-reperfusion injury as well as SPECT or PET imaging methods to detect ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Dr. Rotar

Evan Rotar (Univ of Toledo)
Surgery Resident
Phone: 434-982-3711

Huy Ta

Huy Ta, PhD
Research Scientist
Phone: 434-924-5951
Emailhqt7e@virginia.edu
Huy is working with Dr. Laubach supporting various projects including the role of pannexin-1 and purinergic receptors in lung ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), and molecular imaging of vascular inflammation for early detection of lung IRI by SPECT or PET after transplantation.

Cindy Dodson

Cindy Dodson
Research Specialist and Laboratory Manager
Phone:  434-924-9297
Emailcsq3k@virginia.edu
Cindy manages the laboratory and maintains all of our animal and controlled substances protocols. She also supports all aspects of animal surgeries (especially our porcine models) and helps with mouse colony maintenance and genotyping.

Dustin Money

Dustin Money, RRT-ACCS
Perfusion Specialist
Phone: 434-243-2712
Email: dtm2j@virginia.edu
Dustin was trained as a Critical Care Respiratory Therapist and ECMO Specialist and is working in our lab to support many critical aspects of our animal models of EVLP, IVLP, and ECMO.

Deanna Zielinski

Deanna Zielinski, LVT
Laboratory Specialist
Phone: 434-924-1583
Email: dnz7a@virginia.edu

Deanna is a Licensed Veterinary Technician who is supporting our large animal surgery studies such as porcine models of lung transplant, EVLP, IVLP, and ECMO.

Deepika Kotay

Deepika Kotay, BS, MS
Laboratory Specialist
Phone: 434-924-2258
Email: dmk6yt@virginia.edu
Deepika supports our laboratory research in many ways by conducting various cell, molecular, and biochemical procedures, murine models of lung injury, in vitro studies, mouse colony maintenance, genotyping, and laboratory management. She also help in the training of students and postdocs in all of the laboratory procedure.

Tony Herring

Tony Herring
Grants Administrator
Phone:  434-924-9297
Emailajh@virginia.edu
Tony has been an integral part of our laboratory for over 20 years as a senior surgical technician and laboratory manager before becoming our department’s Director of Research Administration. Tony remains an important member of our laboratory research and is administrator of our grants.

Katharine Cunningham

Katharine Cunningham
Undergraduate Student
Email: koc9jrk@virginia.edu
Katharine is conducting in vitro studies using macrophages as well as flow cytometry analysis of mouse lung cells to characterize the binding of a folate receptor probe to activated macrophages after lung ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Lauren Turse

Lauren Turse
Undergraduate Student
Email: let5mf@virginia.edu
Lauren is conducting in vitro studies studying pulmonary alveolar epithelial cells to determine methods of preserving the alveolar-capillary barrier during in vivo lung perfusion for the treatment of ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome).
