Current Lab Members

Dr. Rotar

Evan Rotar (Univ of Toledo)
Surgery Resident
Phone: 434-982-3711
Email: er9tw@virginia.edu
Evan is a Surgery Research Resident supported by our NIH T32 training grant. One project he is working on is the development of an in vivo lung perfusion (IVLP) method to treat severe ARDS using a porcine model. Evan is also using a rat model to study lung/renal/neurologic injury following cardiopulmonary bypass.

Andy Young

Andy Young (Univ of Virginia)
Surgery Resident
Phone: 434-982-3711
Email: amy2b@virginia.edu
Andy is a Surgery Research Resident supported by our NIH T32 training grant. One project he is working on is the development of an in vivo lung perfusion (IVLP) method to treat severe ARDS using a gastic aspiration porcine model. Andy is also conducting studies in mouse lung ischemia-reperfusion injury as well as porcine model of lung ischemia-reperfusion injury after transplantation.

Ray Strobel

Ray Strobel (Univ of Michigan)
Surgery Resident
Phone: 434-982-3711
Email: rs2tu@virginia.edu
Andy is a Surgery Research Resident supported by our NIH T32 training grant. One project he is working on is the development of an in vivo lung perfusion (IVLP) method to treat severe ARDS using a gastic aspiration porcine model. Huy Ta

Huy Ta, PhD
Research Scientist
Phone: 434-924-5951
Emailhqt7e@virginia.edu
Huy is working with Dr. Laubach supporting various projects including the role of pannexin-1 and TRPV4 channels as well as purinergic receptors in lung ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). In vivo murine and in vitro pulmonary microvascular endothelial cell models are being used. He is also working on methods for molecular imaging methods for early detection of lung IRI via SPECT or PET imaging.

Cindy Dodson

Cindy Dodson
Research Specialist and Laboratory Manager
Phone:  434-924-9297
Emailcsq3k@virginia.edu
Cindy manages the laboratory and maintains all of our animal and controlled substances protocols. She also supports all aspects of animal surgeries (especially our porcine models) and helps with mouse colony maintenance and genotyping.

Dustin Money

Dustin Money, RRT-ACCS
Perfusion Specialist
Phone: 434-243-2712
Email: dtm2j@virginia.edu
Dustin was trained as a Critical Care Respiratory Therapist and ECMO Specialist and is working in our lab to support many critical aspects of our animal models of EVLP, IVLP, and ECMO.

Deanna Zielinski

Deanna Zielinski, LVT
Laboratory Specialist
Phone: 434-924-1583
Email: dnz7a@virginia.edu

Deanna is a Licensed Veterinary Technician who is supporting our large animal surgery studies such as porcine models of lung transplant, EVLP, IVLP, and ECMO.

Tony Herring

Tony Herring
Grants Administrator
Phone:  434-924-9297
Emailajh@virginia.edu
Tony has been an integral part of our laboratory for over 20 years as a senior surgical technician and laboratory manager before becoming our department’s Director of Research Administration. Tony remains an important member of our laboratory research and is administrator of our grants.

Katharine Cunningham

Katharine Cunningham
Undergraduate Student
Email: koc9jrk@virginia.edu
Katharine is currently using Scaffold Proteome Software to conduct comparative proteomic analysis to identify and quantify the complete complement of proteins (the proteome) in the lung after ischemia-reperfusion injury.
