Michael Cullen, MD

Chief Resident
University of Texas, San Antonio

I was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. I attended the University of Texas at Austin for college, and completed medical school at the University of Texas School of Medicine in San Antonio. I never had any intention of leaving the great country of Texas, but a mentor in San Antonio recommended looking into UVA for general surgery residency. I applied for an away rotation and was fortunate to get it. It was September of 2013 and I spent that month on Drs Hedrick and Friel’s colorectal service. It’s a special thing when you go to work and don’t really want to leave because you’re doing what you love with great people. Hedrick and Friel were so welcoming. The residents on the service at the time were great and I remain close friends with them to this day (one of them just had a daughter and asked that I be her godfather). So, that was why I wanted to come here. I was very fortunate to get my wish and match here. On match day, several of the UVA residents called me and all said “Welcome to the family”. While I miss Texas, I have really loved it here. UVA and Charlottesville will always be very special to me. And I am so proud to have had the opportunity to train here.
