Hi! I’m Evan Rotar, a resident in the Integrated Thoracic Surgery program. I grew up in the Hudson Valley region of New York and completed my undergraduate studies in exercise science at the University at Buffalo. Before medical school, I worked as a strength and conditioning coach and then earned a Master’s of Science in Medical Physiology from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. In medical school at the University of Toledo, I developed a great interest in cardiothoracic surgery. I was fortunate to meet Dr. Curt Tribble at a conference and he sparked my interest in training at UVA. As a fourth-year student, I was accepted for a visiting rotation at UVA through the Division of Cardiac Surgery. I was looking for a program who emphasized resident education and training for technical excellence, robust mentorship and collegiality. I never felt more at home than at UVA, and couldn’t have been happier to read UVA – Integrated Thoracic Surgery on my Match Day letter. I spent two years of academic development time in the lab of Dr. Irving Kron performing rehabilitative lung perfusion after ARDS as well as lung transplants in large animal models. I am currently finishing my last year of “pre-fellow” years of the I6 program. Outside the hospital, I love exploring all of the great local eateries, vineyards and outdoor activities Charlottesville offers with my wife, son, and our friends. It has been an honor to continue in the tradition of excellence that UVA Surgery residencies stand for and I’m happy to share the opportunities that training at UVA provides.
