I grew up in the cold and grey Cleveland, OH before ultimately moving to lovely Charlottesville, VA to attend medical school at UVA. From the start, I was interested in pursuing a surgical field for residency and quickly landed on general surgery after my 2 months on service as a third-year student. My experience on general surgery as a student was quite different from what I had heard from friends at other medical centers. To my surprise, the residents actually liked working with each other and truly seemed to enjoy their jobs. The residents and faculty were overwhelmingly welcoming to students. It was the best experience I had as a student. This experience persisted as I completed my 4th-year sub-internships. Like many in my medical school class, I had every intention of trying to stay here for my training and was incredibly fortunate to match here at UVA. My experience as a resident has not changed and I could not be more grateful for having the opportunity to develop here. I am not exaggerating when I say that I believe UVA is one of the best places to train in the country.
