I grew up in Cleveland, OH before ultimately moving to Charlottesville to attend medical school at UVA. My experience on general surgery as a student was quite different from what I had heard from friends at other medical centers. To my surprise, the residents actually liked working with each other and truly seemed to enjoy their jobs. The residents and faculty were overwhelmingly welcoming to students. It was the best experience I had as a student. This experience persisted as I completed my 4th-year sub-internships. Like many in my medical school class, I had every intention of trying to stay here for my training and was incredibly fortunate to match here at UVA. My experience as a resident has not changed and it has been awesome having the opportunity to develop as a surgeon here. I truly believe UVA is one of the best places to train in the country. I will be joining the cardiothoracic surgery fellowship here through the 4+3 program to do general thoracic surgery after finishing general surgery.
