Melanoma

At the University of Virginia, we have a strong interest in treating patients with melanoma in a multi-disciplinary fashion involving the Departments and Divisions of Surgery, Medical Oncology, Dermatology, and Surgical Pathology. These specialties are represented at our weekly educational conferences where patients are reviewed prospectively to develop treatment plans based on reviews of the histologic sections from their surgery and based on their clinical presentation and response to standard and experimental treatment protocols.

Additional expertise from specialty groups including head and neck surgeons, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, and neurosurgeons, are also available readily.

We currently offer patients standard surgical management and consultation regarding adjuvant therapy ranging from alfa-interferon to tumor vaccines for earlier stage disease. We are actively involved in development of some of these novel therapies and are able to provide advice to patients about other alternatives available regionally and nationally if that is more suitable to them. We are developing treatment protocols for patients with advanced unresectable disease as well as patients with high risk resected disease and will be happy to provide consultation and treatment as desired and as appropriate.
