Dear Colleagues,
I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Shawn Pelletier as the next Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery in the Department of Surgery and as Director of the Transplant Service Line at UVA Health. He has been on faculty at the University of Virginia for 12 years, currently as Professor and serving as Interim Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery since September of 2022. Dr. Pelletier was selected after a very competitive national search, and it’s always exciting to learn the best fit for leading our continued growth and success comes from within our own team.
Dr. Pelletier received his medical degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine and completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of Virginia. He additionally completed a Transplantation Fellowship at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Pelletier currently serves as Surgical Director of Liver Transplantation at UVA Health, Medical Director for LifeNet Health, and Transplant Program Director for United National Organ Sharing (UNOS). He is a leader in several professional organizations including the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, International Liver Transplant Society, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. Dr. Pelletier has contributed to more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and some of his research interests include ex vivo liver perfusion and improvements in allocation of deceased donor livers. He is steadfastly committed to providing excellent resident education and mentorship. Additionally, he has displayed a tremendous ability to lead and foster a collective and collaborative culture across multiple disciplines.
I want to thank the search committee, led by Dr. Mitchell Rosner, for their efforts. This is a critically important process and the search committee worked tirelessly.
Dr. Pelletier will be assuming the Chief role effective immediately. Please join me in congratulating him on this well-deserved appointment and continue to support him as part of the UVA family, the Department of Surgery, and the Division of Transplant Surgery.
